The Whitehall building dates back to the late 19th century when it was part of Hillcrest Farm. In the early 1920’s the building was used for a Gun and Weapons Museum. In 1929, Palin Thorley, a master potter from England, and his wife, came to Williamsburg to open a pottery. He created some items exclusively for Colonial Williamsburg and became the first in the 20th century to recreate the five finger posy holder for which Colonial Williamsburg is so well known.

The middle section of the building was used for manufacturing pottery, while the two small rooms in the front of the building were used as the gift shop.

Palin and his wife lived in the two back rooms until she died in 1975. After her death he never came back into the work area of the building and lived alone until he died at the age of 94. When the building was sold at auction the tools he was using at the time of his wife’s death were still in place in the cement sink used for cleaning clay under the Palladian Window on the back wall.

The historic building and ambience are perfect for special occasions. We accommodate banquets, rehearsal and wedding dinners, business dinners and meetings.

The restaurant seats more than 175 and has additional seating on our covered deck and patios. With five dining rooms of various sizes we can usually provide a private room. Dancing is possible and we can arrange for live music.
